Phantasm II (1988)

Hey guys, sorry about the break, just moved, found a job, and re-connected with old friends again, but now that I got everything back on track, let’s talk about Phantasm II. This was my first viewing of the second one, having only seen the first one, and I have to say, I like Phantasm a lot more after this one, and can’t wait to see the rest.

Mike, the kid from the first movie, is back after a six year stay in an institution, and after meeting up with his uncle Reggie, who’s family is killed right away, they go off together to track down Liz, Mike’s psychic girlfriend to be, and The Tall Man, to put an end to his reign of terror.

Phantasm II has quite a few flaws in it, the acting from the supporting cast seems to be pretty null, while the main cast handles themselves quite well. I love Angus Scrimm, who’s name could be used for a slasher already, as The Tall Man, he brings a very malevolent pressence to the film. Paula Irvine, who played Liz, seems to go from delivering lines well, to botching them up completely. She also has that look, as if you remember her from something else, but she has had a very small acting career and retired in the early 90s.

There isn’t all that much gore in the film, but when there it is it a treat to look at. We get to see people melting from the inside out, burned alive, dismembered, it’s awesome. One of my favorite moments in the film comes when a preist uses the word of god against The Tall Man, only to be hung by his own crucifix, showing just how much power god has over The Tall Man.

If your a fan of the first one, and haven’t seen the second ,I think you should check it out, it’s a fun little movie. Or if your like me, and not to big on the first one, maybe this will change your mind. Either way, just go in looking to have some fun, you’ll find it here.

The Last Horror Movie (2003)

Today’s pick was awesome. It’s a good break from the crap I’ve been watching since I got home from vacation. This was a gem I picked up in a bulk purchase that I had forgot I even owned, now it’s going to be one I show everyone who comes over.

The Last Horror Movie starts out the same way as The Signal. That’s to say, showing us ‘another’ movie before it jumps into the real movie. During this false film though you’ll catch references to Halloween, Friday The 13th, and even The New York Ripper. The effects during this part are also purposely bad.

But then the real film kicks in. It would seem that serial killer Max has recorded over the tape we got from the store, to show us what he would consider a much better film. The film in question would be a documentary about his life, as a serial killer. It follows him around his day by day, as he talks about, and shows us, murders and violence.

Max is very well acted in this, as is everyone else, but since he’s on screen 99% of the time, I feel I need to single him out. In movies that fake a documentary feel, it’s very important that the main character not only not look familiar, but also to be acted like some one who isn’t acting at all. This is harder to pull off than many hollywood roles.  But Max feels real.

The effects in the movie are done very well. Be it a hammer to the head, or being stabbed repeatedly, it looks real enough. The camera work is excellent, and even chilling at some points. As Max is killing some one’s wife in front of her husband, the camera stays on the husband. When he’s being killed, it stays on the dead wife. The camera work and the violence in that scene is very profoundly moving.

The messages being passed on through the film are quite disturbing when you think about it. Do we really believe this is fake? If we don’t why are we still watching? There’s many more questions asked by the film, but I think you owe it to yourself to sit down for a viewing and see it yourself.

The House Of The Devil (2009)

Let’s just jump right in this time.

The House Of The Devil is a 2009 film, that really feels like it was made in the early 80s, which is interesting to see a modern film with that nostalgic feeling to it. It’s the simple story of Samantha who takes a baby sitting job from some weirdos in the middle of nowhere, on the night of a solar eclipse. The film starts out by telling us how 70% of Americans in the 70s believed in the existence of satanic cults, so that should give you an idea where the film goes from there.

I can’t tell you too much of the story, because it’s mostly a movie about mood, with the real  horror going down in the last twenty minutes or so. I can say that the sound design in this movie is awesome, and if you can, I suggest watching it with surround sound. The acting is also very well done, though for the most part you’ll be watching just Sam. But that’s ok, she’s cute as hell ,and can act.

The special effects are really well done, and there’s no cgi. Like I said, it’s got that 80s feel, so it’s all practical effects, which makes what gore the movie has stand miles above some of the other films released in 2009.

Directer Ti West wrote, edited, and directed this one, and you can tell a lot of love went into it. It’s a solid movie all around, and a great watch. Two thumbs up.

House Of Wax (2005)

This is one of those movies. You know, you saw the trailer for it, missed it in theaters, and then forgot about it just as quickly. I didn’t get around to seeing it when it was in theaters even though I wanted to, and no one was talking about it, so I forgot I had wanted to see it. So how does it hold up 6 years later? Let’s find out.

Story follows a group of 20-somes on their way to a college football game, when they have to stop to rest. The next morning the fan belt on one of the cars is cut, so half of them head to the game, while two of them, Wade and Carly, played by Jared Padalecki and Elisha Cuthbert, go off into town for a new one.

The highlight of the town is a Wax Museum, which is entirely made out of wax. Inside are some very life like wax dummies, but none of them are of famous people like you would normally expect. Well there’s a simple reason for that. They arn’t famous people, their people that had the misfortune of finding the town, and being covered in wax! The rest of the movie pretty much turns into a fight for your life typical slasher, but hey, I’m ok with that.

The acting is pretty hit or miss. Some of the actors know what their doing, while others ( Paris Hilton * cough*) seem out of place with some bad reactions. As I was watching I thought I was going to say that the characters actions seemed to fit well for their characters, but then I got to the half way point. Once Carly and her brother get together, they start making some terrible choices. They hide a gun, only to go looking for one after. They also decide they need some light, while running/hiding from the killers, so they start flipping switches like they were having a seizure, resulting in a light show that tells the killer just were they are. Smooth.

The gore was surprisingly well done. Every cut, impaling, or straight out beating looks brutal, and for a movie that takes over forty minutes to get to the good stuff, that’s important. The effects of the wax house melting were good at first, but felt too effects heavy by the end. It started with the wax dummies melting, revealing skeletons underneath, and it looked quite nice. But it finished with the whole place on flames, everything melting, the entire building folding in on it’s self, etc. It just seemed to be too much going on at once.

The killers were pretty interesting. They were Siamese twins that had been separated, leaving one looking fine, and the other needing a mask to cover his disfigurement. The good looking brother treats his disfigured brother like a freak, and using it to mind control him.  Throughout the climax of the movie, there is a few scenes that use the idea of the twins for some alright imagery, but it feels pretty forced.

All in all, I’d say check it out. You get some cool effects, and some nice gore. Not to mention seeing Paris Hilton die, and for what it’s worth, that’s always fun.

Autopsy (2008)

I should learn not to read imdb before watching a film. I am almost obsessed with reading what blood and gore is in a movie before I watch it. Mind you I don’t do this to movies that look like the have value on their own, just gore flicks. IMDB told me that Autopsy should be rated NC-17 not R, so I was excited for the bright red and chunky. I don’t think it delivered.

Our story follows a car of 20-somes who get into a car accident. Before anyone has even figured out whats going on, an ambulance arrives, with some shady paramedics. They go back to the hospital, and the fun starts. Is the hospital really what it seems? If so where is all the staff? Why won’t they explain anything?

The story, or the characters for that matter, or the writing, isn’t the strong point of this one. The story is quite plain, the characters are fucking stupid, except for the doctor played by Robert Patrick, but the gore is quite nice. That’s what I was here for anyway, I mean it’s called Autopsy, and has the big red 18A on the back. The gore was done nice, but it’s also done really quickly, and a lot of the deaths seemed to just come and go, I was really disappointed.

Now, I said the characters were stupid, but I really have to re-enforce this. The characters make decisions that only Horror Movie Characters would make. That is to say, unrealistic choices that no sane human would make. It’s your run upstairs instead of out the front door times a hundred.

Still, I`d say give it a shot, Robert Patrick is always fun to watch, and the gore that you see is quite fun. Just don`t expect too much.
